  • knp dehat court, chrisk9 (guest) wrote 16 years ago:
This whole area used to be a park. There wasn't this ugly badly designed and maintained concrete court building. The park comprised play areas for local children, lawns and flower beds maintained by gardners. I remember african marigolds (genda), rose (gulab) bushes, jasmine (chameli) bushes, etc. The residents in the area were middle class professionals up to early 1970s. Mr SM Banerjee, a trade union leader and later and MP, Mr Rohatgi and family of India Electric Works, Saayee was the Sindhi corner tea shop owner, Awasthi and Munshi, his partner ran a stationery and sweet shop, Drs Rohatgi and Kackers practiced dentistry and medicine in the chambers on either side of the street. Yes, there were a few tea and other shops on the ground floor. On my successive visits I have noticed progressive deterioration. No one cares anymore. Unlikely they did before but the population density was much lower. And the streets and gutters were washed regularly. Not anymore. Now, on a working days, the area is dense with people going to the courts, hawkers, vendors and an assortment of road vehicles and pedestrians. The whole area & the buildings in the area has virtually gone to seed and there is rubbish everywhere.

  • P.P.N. Inter college, chrisk9 (guest) wrote 16 years ago:
I, along with my classmates from Christ Church Inter College (CCIC), wrote our intermediate certificate examination papers at this college in the summer of 1961. Now that was a long time ago! A few names I remember are Ajit Patnaik, Ashok Grover, Iqbal Akhter Suleja, Rashid Sultan Baweja, probably Thoma Gokhale too. It would be nice to hear from anyone who can remember more names from that vintage year at CCIC? Mr Hakim was the principal at CCIC.
